Speech, language, and cognition in the cerebellum

Several lines of research suggest critical contributions of some parts of the cerebellum to language and cognition. We and others have long observed responses during speech and language tasks in the cerebellum, and cerebellar malformations, stroke-induced lesions, and degeneration can result in speech and language disturbances. However, the precise nature of cerebellar contributions to language, and the effects of cerebellar damage on the functional organization of the language system remain poorly understood. In this line of work (in collaboration with Anila D’Mello), we are investigating the functional architecture of speech, language, and cognition in the cerebellum of neurotypical adults and children, as well as in individuals with cerebellar damage.
